THE GEOLOGY OF SOUTHERN SPAIN (for the outdoor enthusiast)
This website describes the Geology of Southern Spain, and the geological “story” of how it got to be like it is. It also describes how a selection of some of the familiar landmarks in the region fit into this geological story.
It is aimed at those with a lay scientific interest in how the stunning scenery surrounding us got to be there - without going into gory technical detail. Whilst the content is scientifically “correct” – I am a geologist by degree and profession – and draws on numerous academic papers and publications (listed within), the goal throughout has been to utilise clear, simplified imagery and analogues to help visualize key concepts.
I’ve coined it “Geology for the Outdoor Enthusiast” ! The aim is to enhance enjoyment of the Outdoors through a greater appreciation and understanding of the fascinating forces that have shaped our planet.
There are three main sections:
The key navigation buttons are simply Home and Contents, under the Menu button top left. The Contents page will enable you to navigate the rest of the site - which now also includes a 'News' section, for any update of particular interest.
Finally, it would be great to get your feedback on the site, including any further places/topics of interest you would like to see included. This can be done via the Comments page.
Enjoy !

There are three main sections:
- The Background section gives an overview of some important, fundamental geological concepts.
- The body of the site then describes the geological evolution of southern Spain in four ‘Chapters’ of a story beginning 500 million years ago.
- Then finally it takes a look at some individual landmarks and topics of interest across the region, explaining them in the context of the story told in part two.
